More About Bruce and His Goals

About Bruce Ashworth

Bruce is a second generation union worker and a member of the Roofers, Water Proofers and Allied Workers Local #185. In this union, he serves as recording secretary, on the executive board and on negotiating committees and has done so for several years.

Bruce comes from a large family of hardworking, community-oriented individuals. His father, Pete Ashworth, was a member of the Sheetmetal Local #33 and his three brothers are present members of this same union. One of his sisters is also an active member of the Frontier Local Education Association.

Bruce works at Tri-State Roofing and Sheet Metal in Charleston and is a team leader of the roof service department. He has worked here for nearly 20 years. Prior to joining the Tri-State Roofing and Sheet Metal team, his family owned and operated Taber Inc., a union shop specializing in roofing, sheet metal and HVAC. While there, he ran the roofing side of the business for seven years with the help of his mother, three brothers and two sister-in-laws.

Bruce graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School in 1980 and studied at West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia State College (now West Virginia State University) in Institute and at West Virginia University Parkersburg.

In 1993, Bruce married the love of his life, Daphne Stover. They have four adult children. In 1995, they moved their family from Charleston to Ripley, where they made a home and raised their children. They excitedly welcomed their first grandchild into the world in 2019.

Bruce is an active member of the West Virginia Bow Hunters Association and takes pride in the Archery in the Schools Program. He is also an active committee member of the Kanawha Valley chapter of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, helping to reintroduce Elk back into the Mountain State.

If elected, his focus will be on helping the working families of West Virginia by supporting the following:

1. Nullification of the Right to Work law + bringing back prevailing wages and collective bargaining for all of West Virginia. These laws have done nothing but hurt hard working people. Lowering the standard of living, wages and safety has not saved the State any amount of money.

2. Finding a way to fund and start work immediately on our declining infrastructure throughout the State.

3. Work with policy makers to fund PEIA in a fair way to benefit state employees and give them peace of mind now and when they retire.

A Message from Bruce

So, why have I chosen to run for Senate? For the last eight to ten years, working families have been under attack by corporations, out-of-state interests and the Good ‘Ole Boys in Charleston.

Our law makers have turned their backs on us and have passed legislation that has hurt the people of West Virginia who put them in office. It’s time to change this. The last two years, teachers of West Virginia have stood up and inspired a movement, not only in West Virginia, but nationwide. They have inspired me, too. It’s time to fight and take our government back for the working family, the backbone of our beautiful state.

Are you better off now versus four years ago? How about eight years ago? Right now, West Virginia has more wealth than any time in our history. Do you feel it? Did you get any of it? Have you seen it? If your answer is no to these questions, here’s why:

This wealth doesn’t stay in our state. Just like in the past, out of state interests come in, obliterate our land, minerals and resources while making billions of dollars. This leaves our forests bare, mountains stripped, water polluted and infrastructure in shambles. Let’s stop this together.

There are other problems I will be facing alongside working families, including the following:

- Improving the education system

- Fighting the drug epidemic

- Improving the tax system

- Legalization of cannabis

- Lowering healthcare costs

- Boosting tourism

- Business creation, small and large

My son moved out of state several years ago and currently lives in Florida. My middle daughter will soon be completing her master’s degree but struggles to find quality job opportunities here in West Virginia. If she finds that her career cannot grow here, she will be leaving like my son did.

My youngest daughter recently told me that she too will be leaving West Virginia after completing her associate degree. In addition to all of the previous issues I discussed, I am running to make West Virginia a place where our kids want to stay and a place where they can prosper.

West Virginia’s beauty and potential draws out of state people to come here, not only to visit but to have opportunities of good paying jobs with benefits. They want to afford houses and make their homes in West Virginia. Much like our youth, we need them here. It starts with doing what is right for the hard working families already here. It will evolve into a future with abundant opportunities for our children, grandchildren and neighbors who realize how wonderful West Virginia can be if we work together.
